Zombie Apocalypse - This Is A Spark Of Life

ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE #NEW YORK, -United States#

Genre: Zombiecore

About Zombie Apocalypse

There is no more room in hell.
Zombie Apocalypse plays coarse, violent hardcore designed to animate the lifeless and call the undead to fight the final war. From break-neck thrash to ground-shaking breakdowns, this band has taken on the responsibility of heralding the end of mediocrity, pain, and fear. The destruction left in their wake is the foundation of a new beginning. A combination of rich imagery and frenetic songwriting provides a glimpse of true horror and of the end we all know must be coming. In an attempt to close ranks, Zombie Apocalypse dares listeners to reach out with their cold, rotting hands, and to hold the spark of life.

Review:
PROLOGUE:

So, you've set your ambitions to write an EP full of zombie-music. Now, how would you go about doing that? You could of course pay homage to bands like Goblin, and other acts commonly appearing on soundtracks to movies in the zombie genre, and make a varied mix of instrumentals to encapsulate different moods. You could do like Mortician and other death metal bands, and take the violent approach to it.

Or do it like Zombie Apocalypse - take the best from each world, and mix it with what you know best. As the band is formed from the remnants of Shai Hulud, what they do best would be melodic, intricate metalcore. An EP packed with furios blasting and guitar riff frenzy as well as heavy breakdowns and thrashy sections topped of with multi-layered screaming vocals, this really is a spark of life designed to reanimate even the most lifeless carcass.

REVIEW:

Sure, 10 songs (8 if prologue and epilogue aren't counting) clocking in at just over 11 minutes may not seem like it leaves enough room for anything at all to be conveyed. But with an effective mix of frantic metalcore, hardcore breakdows, thrash parts and movie sound-bites, ZA really delivers. The mood is right on the spot for how one would think a zombie invasion would sound, if translated into music.

Opening track "Forthcoming Apocalypse" is just a noise-filled track with the sole purpose of presenting the concept and leading into 20 second blast "Morti Viventi" (and if you know your italian, the title is more than appropriate) that repeats just one verse, but sets the tone. Following track, "Red, Black, And Blue", is one of the best songs on the record, proving that a song under one minute can still be complete - it features a verse with excellent riffage, and a beautifully off-beat breakdown.

"The Dead in the Queue" is actually over 2 minutes, but still hectically urgent in it's delivery, once again alternating between fast and slow effectively, with an ambiently excellent ending. Hilariously titled "Bastard Sht Bastard" is yet another 20-second adrenaline blast, but serves more as filler before "Every Day Every Horror", another high-light of riffs, breaks and hoarse shouted vocals with zombie motif.

Title track "This Day is a Spark of Life" (okay, not exact-title track) is perhaps the best song on the album, and is just as wonderfully energetic yet catchy as any Shai Hulud ever was - and the chorus lyrics - "This is the skin to the concrete, this is a saw to the bone, this is a spark of life" - is bound to stick like rot in a zombie brain.

The only somewhat trite song on this EP would, in my humble opinion, be "Fill My Mouth With Dirt" - not that it doesn't have a sweet riff and all, but at 40 seconds it's still a wee bit repetative. Extra credit for the Al Pacino-soundclip, and the lead over to the awesomely chugging "March on to Victory" - actually over 3 minutes, and a prime example of how to extend an awesome breakdown into a great song. With eeire guitars, hoarse screams and drums that cut beats in half, it's the perfect closer to an excellent album (although, technically the closer is "Legions of Dead Prepare for War", which is basically just an extension of the previous track, with ambiguous noise added).

I'll try to, for the first time in a review, make a pro/con list.

PROS:
*Musicianship - excellent guitars and drums, with equal parts of speed, hardness and technicallity.
*Subject matter - come on, zombies? I love it.
*Lyrics - although I've barely touched upon the lyrics, they are great. As pretentious as Shai Hulud could be, as perfect are the lyrics in Zombie Apocalypse.
*Vocals - Harsh, hoarse and fits like a glove to the music.

CONS:
*Production - swings from being perfectly imperfect to being bad in places. Very uneven.
*Vocals - Yes, both a pro and a con. But the lyrics can be hard to make out, and they intertwine to the point of incohesiveness at times.
*Song/album lenght - although short songs are awesome, it could've been better if it was longer.
*Two "filler" songs - #5 and #8 (although still good)

RECOMMENDED TRACKS:
"Red, Black, and Blue"
"This Day is a Spark of Life"
"March on to Victory"

EPILOGUE:
For any fan of Shai Hulud, fast melodic metalcore, and/or zombies. I can't recommend this EP enough, if nothing else then just for its artwork (which is awesome) and cult value. But it's the brilliant music that is its main selling point.

Highly anticipated album from Calabrese. Awesome, awesome cd. My only complaints are that they re-recorded 2 songs from their 4 year old "Midnight Spookshow" EP for this and the opening track sounds way too much like the song "Midnight Spookshow".

Nekromantix - Discography

BLOODSUCKING ZOMBIES FROM OUTER SPACE #Austria#

Band Members: Dead Gein: Stand-up drums & vocals
Mr. Evilize: guitar
Dr. Schreck: bass
Revernd Bloodbath: keyboard & electronics

Influences: Mad Sin, Dario Argento, Misfits, Lucio Fulci, Alien Sex Fiend, Richard Ramirez, Alice Cooper, Jeffrey Dahmer, The Damned, George A. Romero, Peter Kürten, Gwar, Ted Bundy, Tobe Hooper, Demented are Go, Jack Unterweger, The Cramps, Terence Fischer....

About Bloodsucking Zombies From Outer Space
At the beginning of the 18th century, the priest Paul Praetorius Pachelbl was thrown on the pyre by a furious mob - after the spiritual had massacred the total Thomaner boy’s choir. However at the last moment, he was abducted by extraterrestrial pirates, which made him their slave. Many years later Pachelbl was freed from his life of slavery by Mr. Evilize, a brutal and most fearsome space pirate. Evilise took him to his home planet, the planet Transylvania. . Transylvania is the root of all evil, a place of frightening and endless torment – this state of mind is fitting to all that dwell on this planet. From here Mr.Evilise roves his territories as he has for centuries as a sort of lawless tramp always on the search for blood and prey but until now always alone. That has changed and Mr. Evilize has found his only real ally in Pachelbl, who he has dubbed "The Reverend Bloodbath" One day whilst searching for interplanetary signals they inadvertently received a short signal from Earth- its contents a documentation over the US American serial killer Edward Theodor Gein. Deep within Reverend Bloodbath, a small seed of hope began to germinate that the earth had finally made a pact with evil. Both men started to research with haste for any information about this planet - unfortunately they got the wrong information from the interplanetary library and instead they were handed a list of films banned on the Earth for their extremely violent content. Equipped with these very incorrect impressions, both men flew to the earth in order to find Ed Gein and form an allegiance of terror. To their deepest regrets, they were too late. Gein had lost his long battle against cancer in 1984. They began to search for a possibility to re-animate Mr.Geins long dead corpse. Evilize remembered a story he had heard many years ago. It was the strange story of a crazy man named Dr. Miroslav Schreck. Evilise remembered hearing that Schreck had developed an Elixir to the acquisition of the immortality itself – it was successful but it had a small side-effect. Finally they decided to find the physician in his Swiss retreat and try to persuade him to participate in their evil plan. The Dr. was a walk over and keen to begin. The serial killers corpse was in a very advanced state of decay and due to his optical appearance he was given the fitting name "Dead Gein". The earthly reality made it clear that Mr. Evilize and The Reverend Bloodbath had made a mistake and the planet was quite stable, no terror and anarchy to be found. Disappointed they concluded that in the autumn of 2002 they would take revenge on the inhabitants of this peaceful planet and stampede over its surface with their evil spouting Rock´n´roll music. The Bloodsucking Zombies from outer Space emerged.

Flesh For Lulu

Flesh for Lulu is an gothic/alternative rock band formed in 1982 in the UK.

History

Nick Marsh (vocals and guitar) and James Mitchell (drums) formed the band and soon recruited Rocco (originally from Wasted Youth, guitar and vocals), and Glen Bishop (bass). They signed to Polydor Records in 1983,bassist Glen Bishop was replaced by Kevin Mills (formerly of Specimen) but the label dropped them a year later after their first eponymous album failed to find any commercial success. Some rumours abounded that a session bassist was used on some tracks of the debut album.

In 1985, the band signed to Statik records and released a mini LP, Blue Sisters Swing which was produced with Craig Leon then they joined Hybrid Records, who released Big Fun City later that year. The next year, the band signed to Beggars Banquet Records, and their song "I Go Crazy" was featured in Some Kind of Wonderful and saw some airplay on American college rock radio stations. This allowed Flesh for Lulu to sustain a successful tour of the US. In 1989, "Decline and Fall" followed and became a top 15 hit on the new Modern Rock Tracks chart. The next year, "Time and Space" became their biggest US hit, hitting the top 10 of the Modern Rock chart, but the song failed to chart on any other US chart. However, the band dissolved soon afterwards.

The Horrors - Sheena is a Parasite

The all female San Francisco sensation

Fabulous Disaster formed in 1998 out of San Francisco, and like their music, the band worked fast and furious and quickly released their debut album "Pretty Killers" in 1999. But it was the release of their sophomore album "Put Out or Get out" in 2001, with the incredible riffs and melodies you hear on hyper-speed fan favorites such as "Gia" and "Down The Drain" that put this foursome into a league of their own. Touring heavily in the US and Europe, the band quickly earned their own legion of fans while appearing with major acts such as NOFX, The Ataris, The Dickies, and Mad Caddies, to name just a few.
In 2003 Fab D released "Panty Raid", which earned them additional respect as one of the foremost bands in their genre. Described by some as an intriguing mixture of the Go-Go's, Joan Jett and Sleater Kinney, one thing was certain - Fabulous Disaster was creating their own delightful niche within the realm of rock & roll.
In 2004 Fab D recruited the talented guitarist Squeaky from Girlush Figure, bringing a new element of explosive stage presence and spice to their music. An accomplished songwriter Squeaky quickly found her soul mates in Mandolyn and Gess as evident by their "I'm A Mess" release- a six pack shot of an EP that showcased the trio's amazing chemistry fueled by wonderful songwriting as evident in the title track.
With the recent addition of bass player Lizzie Boredom to the fold, and great new songs like "Such A Stupid Girl" waiting in the wings, the fab four is now once again complete and ready to kick ass in a town near you.

Reviews:

The most important compilation ever? Easily this is one of the best and most essential. 23 bands from 17 countries, with only 2 being from the US, but with all 23 being awesome! If I were Santa Claus, I would deliver copies of this to all the bad little boys and girls all over the world, to get them off on the right foot of being bad. But is this the most imporant comp ever? I'll leave that to a more well versed thrashologist and just concentrate on some standout songs, though really all of these songs are great, classic punk.
Terveet Kadet and Ohlo Seco both start out with simple, pounding anthems with psychotic vocals. Even though I don't know Finnish or Portuguese, I'll still scream along with both bands choruses. When I first heard the Crucifucks cut on this comp, I cringed at the painfully snotty, hysterically ranting, whiny vocals, but now I love 'em, along with the right on lyrics and scrappy mid tempo punk that turns it from someone on a street corner, to a gnarly anthem for a world in the clutches of corporate and governmental power. OK.
Kidnap have one of the most catchiest Oi! or streetpunk, or singalong melodic punk tracks I've ever heard. I can imagine millions of drunk kids with mohawks across the world singing along to the songs simple refrain of "NO NO SS!" in their own accented English. Of course, I'm not thinking about that while the song is playing, cuz I'm singing along too fervently with my friends though I don't have a mohawk and don't drink. This song is perfectly followed up by NOTA, a whirlwind of HC that would even start a circle pit in Oklahoma of all places! I love this band! Watch out for dust!
RIP, from Spain, are one of the bands I'd never heard about before I heard this comp, and it's too bad. They play some Discharge/UK inspired HC and it rules. Did this band release anything else????
Depression unleash a song that is both throbbing and melodic, another fist pounder! The Stalin's "Chicken Farm" (or "Animal Farm") is a raucous, barn burner (ahem) song that has some incredibly thought-provoking metaphorical lyrics, well, at least the English translation. Some zine I just read described the Stalin as "if your favorite D-beat band played Gang of Cour covers". That description is almost right on the money, but this isn't as discordant as Gang of Four. Unique and classic punk!
U.B.R. from Yugoslavia, thrash out a tune that reminds me of a less distorted Confuse or some other Japanese noisy thrash band! Noisy, harsh, fast...damn this is good! I wonder if this band was from a different country, would they have lasted or become more well known? Their demo tape has just been released on vinyl by the Japanese label Crust War, which makes sense to me. Can't wait to hear it.
Raw Power, Rattus, and BGK all have awesome tracks on this and those bands are deserving of all the attention they get, so I'll just say that, if you like those bands, you'll love the songs they have on here. If you don't like them, you need to hear this for the other bands, and if you haven't heard any of these bands, drop me a line and I'll tape this comp for ya, cuz like I said, it's essential.

One of the first couple international compilations to come out, where Life Is A Joke covers world punk as it is, this LP covers the scene more as it "should be" - more political with a "spirit of independence and resistance" in every cut. Overall a very worthy album.
